A Ball for Daisy by Chris Raschka

Summary:

A Ball for Daisy, written and illustrated by Chris Raschka, is the winner of the 2012 Caldecott Medal.  In a wordless children´s book, Daisy is a fiesty black eared dog that has a beloved red ball that he plays with indoors or outdoors.  One day at the park Daisy has an encounter with a brown dog where sadly her red ball pops.  Daisy nudges, sniffs it, and shakes it before helplessly gazing at her owner.  The next day Daisy and her owner return to the park where she again sees the same brown dog.  Her sadness turns to gleefulness when she sees that the dog brought a blue ball and lets Daisy take it home.

Through Raschka´s use of ink, watercolor, and gouache, the readers can envision the emotion on Daisy´s face when she fears her beloved red ball is missing or gone forever.  The illustrations portray a variety of canine moods and shows the importance of the red ball by adding striking contrast.
